Why Mild Steel Water Pipes Still Carry Australia’s Most Demanding Infrastructure Jobs?

Steel pipeline materials for water infrastructure construction in Australia should comply with AS 1579 for arc-welded steel pipes and fittings and with AS 1281 for cement mortar lining. Compliance is an assumption that should be expected from all suppliers, but is not a differentiation point. Apart from compliance, the procurement process requires the understanding of how the pipe, fittings, jointing consumables and corrosion protection system act as an overall product, not as individual components from different suppliers.

Based on the Bureau of Meteorology‘s National Performance Report 2024-25, the median number of water main breaks for Australia’s Major Urban water utilities is 16.8 per 100 kilometres of water mains. Such statistics take into account the combined effects of ageing of the networks’ infrastructure which has been constructed mainly in the mid-twentieth century and which was designed to last much shorter than it has lasted so far.

What Mild Steel Does That Other Materials Cannot?

What makes steel waterpipes so unique when dealing with water infrastructure projects is the combination of structural durability and the material’s capacity to cope with tough installation conditions. Projects involving difficult terrain, river crossings, high-pressure bulk water transmission mains, and installations where soil movements and loads require pipe materials capable of coping with them are all projects where mild steel demonstrates reliable performance.

Wall thicknesses starting from 4.5 mm and up to 20 mm and laying lengths from 6 m to 13.4 m allow for flexible engineering of projects and specifying what conditions require and what conditions can be accepted by the installation. No need to adapt the design according to a product with fixed dimensions.

Corrosion Protection Is the Asset, Not an Add-On

The main problem with steel is the tendency of the material to corrode in case of contact with soils and groundwaters and electrochemical reactions associated with different compositions of grounds in Australia. Specification of the pipe without equal consideration of the corrosion protection system is what causes problems for future engineers who will have to deal with them.

Corrosion protection standards for buried steel mains include application of an external coating made of polyethylene over the fusion-bonded layer and internal lining made of cement mortar. Arc-welded steel pipes and fittings for water and wastewater are specified in AS 1579, while AS 1281 specifies cement mortar lining of steel pipes and fittings.

Jointing Systems and Where Pipeline Reliability Is Actually Decided

The strength of any pipeline installation is the same as that of its weakest joint. Pipe specifications and jointing systems should go hand in hand; the selection of each should not occur independently of the other but should be compatible with the design.

Push-together rubber ring joint systems provide rapid installation and tolerance of alignment error as well as thermal movement without on-site welding. Such joints suit the installation of pipelines in distribution networks where the installation speed can be an operational advantage and where working pressures lie within the joint performance capabilities. Fully welded joints produce seamless pipe installations with no mechanical interfaces between sections along the whole pipeline. Such systems are the appropriate choice for long-distance transmission mains where joint integrity is required in conditions of constant high pressure and limited access for inspections and maintenance.

Trifurcates, bends, reducers, and special branches can be manufactured according to specific geometries. The fitting system compatible with the selected pipe specification and corrosion protection should be chosen at the design stage of a project in order to avoid problems arising from treating all three elements as separate procurement lines.

What Procurement and Installation Actually Require?

The restoration of the protection coating at the welded joints or welded joint reinstatement, requires the services of properly trained and certified welders. Joint reinstatement is always underestimated during steel pipeline installation. Manufacturing and coating lead times and transportation to sites in varied Australian geography are the elements that should be planned at the project program stage, not considered later when the procurement process starts.
