Yesterday Annabelle flew into Sydney so we decided to meet at Kitchen By Mike for brekky. If you haven’t been there already, it’s an amazing space – a converted warehouse – with a cafeteria-style set up. All the freshly prepared, seasonal dishes are lined up along the counter and a bustling line of customers shuffle past to make their selection. My sultana pastry (which I ate far too quickly to photograph!) was made by one of the cooks, Kurt, who arrives at 4am every morning to get baking – how’s that for dedication. It was so good – better than I have eaten in France where the pain de raisin is definitely my breakfast of choice – so I’m a convert! Annabelle had fruit and nut toast with fresh ricotta and honeycomb. A great start to the day.

This weekend I attended the Photography 101 class held by Brooke Holm. As a fan of Brooke’s amazing photos I knew this would be fun. After a 4am start to make my flight to Sydney, I arrived to meet a group of about 30 eager-beavers at The School where we were greeted by the much-fêted Megan Morton. Yes, she really is as nice as everyone says and was very welcoming.

After we were seated Brooke opened with her presentation on the basics of photography with many tips on how to achieve great photos for blogs and Instagram. The audience ranged from rank beginners who had just bought their cameras to those with a pretty good handle on their gear. We spent the day shooting vignettes that had been set up for us, with Brooke offering tips and tricks on making the shots as good as they could be.

Brooke’s bestie, Marsha Golemac, was also on hand to offer words of wisdom, sharing tips on styling and photography. A really delicious lunch of sandwiches, homemade sausage rolls and chocolate covered marshmallow-studded pretzels was provided by Cassie Lucas of Fire Cracker Event.

I met some really lovely people, all passionate about improving their photography and learning more about the industry – including Georgia, an incredibly inspiring year 9 student who was intent on a career in New York and Leanne from Sweet Style who is one of our valued advertisers – we have been emailing each other for years but had never actually met face-to-face.

A big thanks to Brooke and Megan who were both very giving of their time and knowledge. I hope these photographs go some way towards conveying the great time had by all!

Photographed by Trish Chong from Tealily Photography, their story and their home is heartwarming and inspiring. Rhonda – creator of the popular Pink Ronnie blog and Trish have now teamed up on a new project. Life Captured is an intensive memory keeping and photography workshop. With a philosophy that rings true with us here at fête. Their aim is to help people create memories that are simple, beautiful and tangible with a real and honest photography style, helping people learn the skills and gain the resources to document their lives in the same way. The Life Captured workshop offers a combination of skills teaching both the technical and emotional side of documentary photography, including editing and work flow through to journal methods and memory keeping systems. The first sold out workshop will be held in Sydney in August, however with plans for many more in the future contact either of the girls at hello@lifecapturedworkshop.com to register your interest.
