To cap off national Food Allergy Awareness Week, we’re sharing the recipes we used for our delicious Rocky Road and delectable Vanilla Cupcakes in our current Issue 02, both adapted from recipes by Queen Bee Allergy Free. Seriously, the Rocky Road is completely irresistible – I usually end up eating the whole lot! The vanilla cupcakes rise beautifully in the patty pans and are the perfect base for icing or fillings. You can find the Rocky Road recipe here and the Vanilla Cupcake recipe here. This week marks Food Allergy Awareness Week here in Australia, an important time to me as my sweetheart six year old niece, Bel, lives with severe food allergies. Most people don’t have to think twice about the food they eat but in our family we put lots of thought and care in to every meal to ensure Bel stays safe. When she recently celebrated her birthday, we threw her and two of her best friends an art party which we have featured in our latest issue. Undoubtedly the highlight of the day was the birthday cake. I baked one of our family favourites, Robyn’s Wacky Cake – laden with dairy-free ‘buttercream’, adapted from a recipe from the Queen Bee Allergy Free blog. This cake is dairy, egg and nut free so everyone enjoyed a slice or two. It really is so delicious even non-allergic people came back for seconds. You can find this fantastic recipe here and more information on food allergies here.

I have just returned from a fantastic few days in Sydney, brimming with ideas after visiting the most amazing shops and venues. Without a doubt, the highlight of my trip was a visit to the new Koskela showroom in Rosebery. When we arrived we had lunch at Kitchen By Mike. I cannot stop thinking about this setup and how utterly sensible and thoroughly brilliant it is – seasonal food, cooked fresh each day after a trip to the market to see what’s good. Served canteen style, no bookings taken, a snake of well over 50 customers greeted us and we were there bang on opening time. Food was served by the scoop – I had a little fish with fennel salad, ‘caviar’ lentils with brussels sprouts and cauliflower gratin. Then a slice of heavenly pear tart – all served on blue-rimmed enamel plates. Drinks were served in mini glass bottles with cute straws, salt and pepper in jar lids. The trick was to find a seat, many people shared tables with others. You can sit indoors and soak up the ambiance of the hungry waiting crowd, or sit in the courtyard – as we did – and admire the simple but completely stylish landscaping of olive and citrus trees. After our delicious meal (and it was really, really good), I couldn’t wait to have a look through the Koskela showroom in the old Rosella warehouse. Beautifully designed, styled and furnished, it’s easy to wander through and impossible not to find a treasure or two. They feature large furniture items, stunning rugs, lightshades, a great range of children’s pieces as well as decorative and utilitarian homewares. If you live in Sydney, or are visiting some time soon, a trip to Koskela and Kitchen by Mike is a must do. 85 Dunning Avenue, Rosebery NSW.

I have been looking for a new bedroom lamp that is unique and interesting, and while this one isn’t quite right for my room – it’s a great idea all the same. The SAKO – abaca sack lamp is $122.00USD from 7100Islands shop on Etsy. This ethically sourced, rare fabric from the Higaonon tribe of the Philippines is naturally heat resistant and the product of a centuries old weaving technique.
